Name Information:

His name - Inutaisho (or Inu-no-taisho) means Dog-Leader. He is also sometimes called Inuyasha no Chichi which simply means 'Father of Inuyasha'

Character Description:

Father to Inuyasha and Sesshomaru, InuTaisho was lord of the Western lands and held a castle in Saigoku (Western Nation). Since his death, he now resides in his tomb which is magically hidden in Inuyasha's right eye. His age at the time of his death was unknown, but he was thought to have lived for several centuries.

InuTaisho had two swords crafted from his own fangs. Tetusaiga, the sword of earth, with the power to slay a hundred demons in one strike, and Tensaiga, the sword of heaven, with the power to restore the lives of a hundred humans in one strike. He was also in possession of Sou'unga, the sword of Hell which was actually made from a fang of another InuYoukai.

On the night of InuYasha's birth, InuTaisho returns badly wounded from a battle with the dragon Ryuukotsai. But instead of taking the time to recover, he rushes to the side of his Beloved Izayoi, who at that moment was giving birth in a heavily guarded palace. Knowing, that by rushing into another battle, he would not survive.
He revives Izayoi, who had been murdered in childbed, with Tensaiga. After naming his son and sending Izayoi to safety, InuTaisho confronts Setsuna no Takemaru in a final Battle. He dies when the burning palace collapses on him and Takemaru, sacraficing his life, to protect the ones he loves.
